Since 1950, the Panama City Housing Authority has been providing affordable housing for many low-income families in Panama City. The PCHA provides and facilitates affordable housing for 450 apartment homes, 416 Housing Choice Vouchers (Section Eight) and 60 Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers. I’ll never forget it, sitting there in the sleeping bag in a white van, hearing the traffic go by at night, in tears some nights. I was waiting for a call the next day from either Father Bill’s & MainSpring or the Department of Veterans Affairs to say, ‘we have something for you.’ I made some good inroads getting my own apartment, I worked hard, I did what the staff told me to do and stayed out of trouble. I was still a dad at the same time, saw my kids when I could. The best part was that I did it all on my own. Nobody handed it to me. When I got that phone call, ‘Your voucher is in for VASH,’ I think I went to my room and cried. I didn’t imagine this ever happening, and here I am today sitting in a beautiful apartment.
